ING Defined Benefit Plans

Ready to learn how to deduct $100,000 or more each year and save $40,000 or more in taxes?

Eligibility Test:

DB isn't right for everyone. Here's a quick test to find out if it's right for your client:

  • Is your client 45 years of age or older?
  • Does client want to contribute more than $49,000 annually to their retirement plan?
  • Does client expect to be able to make that contribution for at least three to five years?
  • Has not contributed to a qualified retirement plan this year?

High income earners 50 or older may be eligible to contribute to a defined benefit three or four times the amount they might otherwise contribute to a SEP, SIMPLE IRA, or a combined 401(k)/Profit Sharing Plan.

How A Defined Benefit Plan Works ~ Example:

Richard is age 52 and owns a consulting company earning $170,000 annually, with no employees. Because of his age income and intention to retire at age 62, he is able to contribute approximately $150,000. Which is a tax savings of $56,680 each year. Compared to:

Plan participants 50 and older may contribute an additional $2,500 to a SIMPLE IRA, and $5,500 to a 401(k).

Q: What is the right retirement age?
A: The typical retirement age is between 62 and the later of age 65 or 5 years.

Q: How do I know how much money can be contributed each year to the Defined Benefit plan?
A: Hayashi& Wayland Retirement Plan Services informs you annually of the contribution requirements for the coming year. At year-end of that year, Hayashi & Wayland again reminds you to fully fund the contribution before filling your taxes.

Q: Upon retirement, what happens to the plan and its assets?
A: The plan is generally terminated and the assets rolled into an IRA account, at which time the normal IRA rules on tax deferred growth and mandatory distribution apply.

Q: Does my accountant need to do extra tax filling preparation because of my Defined Benefit plan?
A: No. Hayashi & Wayland Retirement Plan Services provides you with all the plan tax forms and calculations.

Q: Can you do both a 401(k) and a Defined Benefit?
A: Under certain conditions, you may combine 401(k) contributions with a Defined Benefit plan. Ask your Hayashi & Wayland Retirement Plan Services Representative for more information.
